How to Convert MP4 to MP3 on iPhone and Android (Free, No App)
Convert MP4 to MP3 on iPhone and Android with a browser method that needs no app, plus built-in options, bitrates and file sizes.

The quickest way to turn an MP4 into an MP3 on a phone is in your browser: open the MP4 to MP3 converter in Safari or Chrome, pick the video from your Photos or Files, tap Convert, and save the MP3. It works on iPhone and Android, needs no app or account, and the video never leaves your phone.
Below are the exact steps for each phone, which format and bitrate to choose, and what to do when the file won’t open.
Before you start
- Use files you have the right to use. Your own recordings, lectures you’re allowed to keep, voice notes and clips you made. Converting a downloaded music video or a film is a copyright question, not a technical one.
- Links don’t work. This method converts a video file stored on your phone. It doesn’t download from YouTube, TikTok or Instagram.
- Use a recent browser. Current versions of Safari, Chrome and Firefox all work.
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Safari and go to the MP4 to MP3 converter.
- Tap Choose videos. iOS offers Photo Library, Take Video or Choose File.
- Videos you recorded are in Photo Library.
- Videos saved from WhatsApp, email or AirDrop may be in Files (Choose File).
- Choose MP3 and a bitrate. 192 kbps suits music; 128 kbps is fine for speech.
- Tap Convert. Only the sound is processed, so it usually takes seconds.
- Tap Download. Safari asks to download the file; tap Download again.
- Find the MP3 in Files → Downloads (or On My iPhone → Downloads). From there you can share it, play it, or move it to another folder.
Tip for iPhone videos: iPhones often record in HEVC inside a .MOV file rather than MP4. That’s fine; the converter accepts MOV too.
Adding the MP3 to the Music app isn’t possible directly on an iPhone. Apple’s Music app only syncs audio from a computer or a streaming library. To listen on your phone, play the MP3 from the Files app, or use a player app that opens files.
On Android
- Open Chrome (or Firefox, Samsung Internet) and go to the MP4 to MP3 converter.
- Tap Choose videos. Android shows a file picker; tap Browse or the menu (☰) to find Gallery, Photos, Downloads or WhatsApp Video.
- Pick MP3 and a bitrate, and tick Mono for lectures or voice notes.
- Tap Convert, then Download.
- The MP3 lands in your Downloads folder. Most music apps, including Samsung Music and the Files app, find it there automatically.
WhatsApp videos on Android are usually in the WhatsApp Video folder inside Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media. On newer Android versions some file pickers hide this folder; save the video to your gallery from WhatsApp first if you can’t see it.
MP3, M4A or WAV?
| Format | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Sharing, any device, car stereos | Plays everywhere. Small files. |
| M4A (AAC) | Best quality for the size | Often the exact audio already inside the MP4, so it can be copied without re-encoding and with no quality loss. Plays on iPhone, Android and most computers. |
| WAV | Editing in an audio app | Uncompressed and large: about 10 MB per minute. |
If you only want to listen and the device supports it, M4A is the best choice: it’s faster and keeps the original quality. Choose MP3 when you don’t know what device will play it.
Which bitrate?
The bitrate sets the quality and the size. You can’t add detail that wasn’t in the video’s original sound, so higher isn’t always better.
| Bitrate | Size per minute (stereo) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 64 kbps mono | about 0.5 MB | Voice notes, lectures |
| 128 kbps | about 1 MB | Podcasts, speech, casual music |
| 192 kbps | about 1.4 MB | Music (a good default) |
| 256 kbps | about 1.9 MB | Music, high quality |
| 320 kbps | about 2.4 MB | The MP3 maximum |
A 45-minute lecture at 64 kbps mono is about 21 MB; the same lecture at 192 kbps stereo would be about 65 MB with no audible gain for speech.
Trim the audio afterwards
Videos often have silence or chatter at the start and end. Open the MP3 in the audio trimmer, drag the start and end points, and save just the part you need. That’s useful for ringtones (keep it under 30 seconds) or for pulling one song from a recorded concert.
If you need to change formats later (say, M4A to MP3 for an old car stereo), the audio converter converts between MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG and others.
Built-in alternatives
iPhone Shortcuts. You can build a Shortcut with the “Encode Media” action set to “Audio Only”, which saves an M4A file. It works, but it takes some setup and only outputs M4A.
Android video editors. Some phone gallery editors let you export audio only. Options vary by brand and change between updates.
Desktop apps. On a computer, VLC (free) can convert video to MP3 through Media → Convert/Save. It’s more steps, but useful for very large files.
The browser method avoids installing anything and works the same on every phone.
Troubleshooting
“Format not supported.” The video may use an unusual audio codec. Try saving it again from the app it came from, or convert the video with the video converter first.
The download doesn’t appear. On iPhone, check Files → Downloads, or Safari’s download list (the arrow icon in the address bar). On Android, check the notification shade or the Files app’s Downloads.
Conversion stops on a very long video. Phones have limited memory. Close other apps and tabs, or trim the video first with the video trimmer.
The MP3 has no sound. Some screen recordings are saved without audio. Play the original video with the volume up to check there’s sound in it.
FAQ
Can I convert MP4 to MP3 on my phone without an app?
Yes. A browser-based converter runs in Safari or Chrome. You pick the video, convert, and download the MP3, with nothing to install.
Does converting MP4 to MP3 reduce quality?
Slightly, because MP3 re-encodes the sound. At 192 kbps or more, most people can’t hear the difference. For no loss at all, choose M4A, which copies the original AAC audio when the video has it.
Is it safe to use an online converter for private videos?
It depends on the site. Many converters upload your file to a server. Ours processes it in your browser, so the video stays on your phone.
How do I set the MP3 as a ringtone?
On Android, trim it to under 30 seconds, then in Settings → Sound → Ringtone choose the file from Downloads. iPhones need ringtones in a special format added through GarageBand or a computer.
