What the word counter measures
The counter updates instantly as you type or paste. This tool is about words, sentences, paragraphs, pages and reading time. If you only need to fit a strict character limit, such as a social post or a meta description, the character counter is built for that job. Here is exactly what each number on this page means, so you can match the rules of your school, publisher or platform.
- Words: runs of letters or numbers. “Don’t” and “e-mail” are one word each. A comma or full stop inside a number splits it, so “1,250” and “3.14” count as two words here.
- Characters: every letter, number, space and punctuation mark. Emoji count as one character each.
- Characters without spaces: the same, minus spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Sentences: text ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Paragraphs: blocks of text separated by a blank line.
- Reading time: words ÷ 238, the average adult silent-reading speed.
- Speaking time: words ÷ 150, a comfortable pace for a speech or video script.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman and 1-inch margins on Letter or A4 paper. That rule of thumb comes from roughly 500 words on a single-spaced page and 250 on a double-spaced one.
The real number moves with your settings. Arial is a wider font than Times New Roman, so the same text takes up more room; the table allows about 10% fewer words per page for it. Headings, short paragraphs, bullet lists, block quotes and a title page all push the page count up. Treat every figure below as an estimate, and check the page count in your own document before you submit.
| Words | Times New Roman, single | Times New Roman, double | Arial, single | Arial, double |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | ½ page | 1 page | 0.6 pages | 1.1 pages |
| 500 | 1 page | 2 pages | 1.1 pages | 2.2 pages |
| 750 | 1.5 pages | 3 pages | 1.7 pages | 3.3 pages |
| 1,000 | 2 pages | 4 pages | 2.2 pages | 4.4 pages |
| 1,500 | 3 pages | 6 pages | 3.3 pages | 6.7 pages |
| 2,000 | 4 pages | 8 pages | 4.4 pages | 8.9 pages |
| 2,500 | 5 pages | 10 pages | 5.6 pages | 11.1 pages |
| 3,000 | 6 pages | 12 pages | 6.7 pages | 13.3 pages |
| 5,000 | 10 pages | 20 pages | 11.1 pages | 22.2 pages |
Assumptions: 12 pt font, 1-inch margins on every side, no extra space between paragraphs, plain body text.
Going the other way works the same: if a teacher asks for “three pages, double-spaced”, aim for about 3 × 250 = 750 words.
How many handwritten pages is 1,000 words?
Handwriting varies far more than fonts do. On lined A4 or Letter paper, most people fit somewhere between 150 and 250 words on a page. That makes 1,000 words about 4 to 7 handwritten pages.
To find your own number, count the words on one full page you have written, then divide the target by it. If one page holds 200 words, a 1,000-word answer needs 1,000 ÷ 200 = 5 pages. This is worth doing once before an exam, so you know how much paper a “1,000-word” question really takes.
Why Google Docs and Microsoft Word give different counts
Paste the same essay into Word, Google Docs and this page and the totals often differ by a few words. None of them is wrong; they follow different rules for what a “word” is.
- Word counts anything between two spaces. A lone dash, an ampersand or a bullet symbol with spaces around it can count as a word in Microsoft Word. This counter ignores anything that has no letters or numbers in it.
- Dashes. Words joined by an em dash with no spaces (“yes—no”) count as one word in Word, because there is no space between them. This counter, and as far as we can tell Google Docs, treats them as two.
- Numbers and web addresses. Word sees “1,250” or a web address as a single word. This counter splits at commas, full stops, slashes and similar marks, so one URL can add several words.
- Hyphenated words. “Well-known” counts as one word here and in Word. Other tools do not always agree, so expect small gaps in text with lots of hyphens.
- Footnotes, text boxes and headers. Word’s Word Count dialog has a checkbox to include text boxes, footnotes and endnotes. Google Docs focuses on the main body of the document. This page only counts what you paste into the box.
The exact rules inside Word and Google Docs are not fully documented and can change between versions. If your school or publisher names a tool, use that tool’s count for the final check. On a 2,000-word essay, a gap of 1–2% is normal.
How long does it take to say? Speaking time by words
Most people speak at about 130 to 150 words per minute when giving a talk. Nerves tend to push the speed up; pauses for slides or laughter pull it down. Use the lower figure if you plan to speak slowly or to an audience listening in a second language.
| Speech length | Words at 130 wpm | Words at 150 wpm |
|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | 130 | 150 |
| 2 minutes | 260 | 300 |
| 3 minutes | 390 | 450 |
| 5 minutes | 650 | 750 |
| 10 minutes | 1,300 | 1,500 |
| 15 minutes | 1,950 | 2,250 |
| 20 minutes | 2,600 | 3,000 |
| 30 minutes | 3,900 | 4,500 |
Example: a wedding toast with a 3-minute slot needs about 390 to 450 words. If the counter shows 600 words, you will speak for about 4 minutes at 150 words per minute, so cut roughly a quarter of the text.
Reading silently is much faster. At 238 words per minute, a 1,000-word article takes about 4 minutes 12 seconds to read, against about 6 minutes 40 seconds to read aloud at 150 words per minute.

| Typical college essay | 500–650 words |
| Abstract of a research paper | 150–250 words |
Limits change from time to time, so check the current rule on the platform or in your assignment brief. Our guide to word and character limits collects more of them, with notes on what each platform counts.
Hitting a word limit
- Over the limit? Cut filler phrases first: “in order to” becomes “to”, and “due to the fact that” becomes “because”. Then remove whole sentences that repeat a point you already made.
- Under the limit? Add an example, a number or a short quote that supports your argument, rather than stretching sentences.
- Ceiling or range? “Up to 650 words” is a hard ceiling, and many application portals will not accept more. A range such as 500–650 words means anything inside it is fine.
Use keyword density wisely
The Top keywords list shows the words you repeat most, ignoring common words like “the” and “and”. It is useful for spotting accidental repetition in an essay, or for checking that a blog post actually covers its main topic. There is no magic keyword percentage for SEO: write naturally for readers, and use the list to catch words you have overused.
