How to Calculate CGPA from SGPA (With Examples)
Calculate CGPA from SGPA using credits, as in the UGC CBCS rules. Worked examples on 10-point and 4.0 scales, plus common mistakes to avoid.

To calculate your CGPA, multiply each semester’s SGPA by that semester’s credits, add the results, and divide by your total credits. The SGPA itself is worked out the same way, one level down: each course’s grade point times its credits, added up, divided by the semester’s credits.
CGPA = Σ (semester credits × SGPA) ÷ Σ semester credits
This is the method set out in the University Grants Commission’s guidelines for the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), which most Indian universities follow, and the same credit-weighted average is used by universities on the 4.0 scale in Pakistan and elsewhere. The CGPA calculator does it for any number of semesters.
Step 1: Know your grade points
On the UGC 10-point scale, each letter grade has a fixed grade point:
| Letter grade | Grade point |
|---|---|
| O (Outstanding) | 10 |
| A+ (Excellent) | 9 |
| A (Very Good) | 8 |
| B+ (Good) | 7 |
| B (Above Average) | 6 |
| C (Average) | 5 |
| P (Pass) | 4 |
| F (Fail) / Ab (Absent) | 0 |
Each university decides which marks earn which letter, so check your academic regulations for the mark ranges. Non-credit courses graded “Satisfactory” or “Unsatisfactory” are left out of SGPA and CGPA.
Step 2: Calculate the SGPA for one semester
Say your semester has six courses:
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade point | Credit points (credits × GP) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 4 | A+ | 9 | 36 |
| Physics | 4 | A | 8 | 32 |
| Programming | 3 | O | 10 | 30 |
| Electronics | 3 | B+ | 7 | 21 |
| Communication skills | 2 | A | 8 | 16 |
| Lab | 1 | O | 10 | 10 |
| Total | 17 | 145 |
SGPA = 145 ÷ 17 = 8.53.
A simple average of the six grade points would be 52 ÷ 6 = 8.67. That’s wrong, because the 1-credit lab would count as much as 4-credit Mathematics.
Step 3: Calculate the CGPA across semesters
Now take four semesters:
| Semester | Credits | SGPA | Credits × SGPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 20 | 7.80 | 156.0 |
| 2 | 22 | 8.20 | 180.4 |
| 3 | 24 | 8.60 | 206.4 |
| 4 | 18 | 9.00 | 162.0 |
| Total | 84 | 704.8 |
CGPA = 704.8 ÷ 84 = 8.39.
The simple average of the four SGPAs is 8.40. Close, but not the same: the best semester (9.00) had the fewest credits, so it pulls the CGPA up less. With bigger differences in credits, the gap grows.
The UGC’s own illustration for a three-year honours degree works the same way: six semesters with 20, 20, 26, 26, 24 and 24 credits and SGPAs from 6.7 to 9.15 give a CGPA of 1,080 ÷ 140 = 7.71.
The shortcut, and when it fails
If every semester has the same number of credits, the CGPA equals the plain average of your SGPAs. Many programmes have unequal semesters, though, especially the first year and the final project semester. Use the weighted method unless you’ve checked the credits are equal.
The same method on a 4.0 scale
Universities in Pakistan and the US use a 4.0 scale with credit hours. A common scale in Pakistani universities looks like this, but each university sets its own mark ranges:
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.00 |
| A− | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B− | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
Example semester:
| Course | Credit hours | Grade | Points | Credit hours × points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Data Structures | 3 | A− | 3.67 | 11.01 |
| Islamic Studies | 3 | B+ | 3.33 | 9.99 |
| Physics | 3 | B | 3.00 | 9.00 |
| English | 2 | A− | 3.67 | 7.34 |
| Physics Lab | 1 | A | 4.00 | 4.00 |
| Total | 15 | 53.34 |
GPA = 53.34 ÷ 15 = 3.56. The CGPA then combines semesters by credit hours exactly as in Step 3. For US-style letter grades, weighted classes and high school GPA, see how to calculate GPA or use the GPA calculator.
What CGPA do I need in the remaining semesters?
Rearrange the formula to find the average SGPA you need from here on:
With the four semesters above (8.39 CGPA on 84 credits) and another 84 credits to go, reaching an 8.5 CGPA needs:
(8.5 × 168 − 704.8) ÷ 84 = (1,428 − 704.8) ÷ 84 = 8.61 average SGPA over the next four semesters.
If the answer is above 10 (or 4.0), the target is out of reach. The later you are in your degree, the harder your CGPA is to move, because each new semester is a smaller share of your total credits.
Common mistakes
Averaging SGPAs when credits differ. The most common error. Always weight by credits.
Counting failed courses wrongly. An F counts as 0 points but its credits still go into the total, until you clear it. After a re-attempt, many universities replace the F with the new grade; others keep both. Your regulations decide.
Including non-credit courses. Audit courses, NCC/NSS and other “Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory” courses are excluded.
Rounding too early. Keep two or three decimals in SGPAs when you calculate. Rounding each semester to one decimal can move the final CGPA by a few hundredths.
Converting CGPA to percentage with the wrong formula. There is no single conversion. CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5, VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, and many universities have their own rule or none at all. Our guide to CGPA to percentage lists the official formulas we could verify.
FAQ
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (semester grade point average) covers one semester. CGPA (cumulative grade point average) covers every semester so far, weighted by credits.
Can I just average my SGPAs?
Only if every semester has the same number of credits. Otherwise, multiply each SGPA by its credits, add them up and divide by total credits.
Is CGPA out of 10 or 4?
It depends on your university. Indian universities following UGC CBCS use a 10-point scale. Most universities in Pakistan, the US and many other countries use 4.0.
How do I find my credits for each semester?
They’re printed on your grade card or marksheet, usually as “credits registered” or “credits earned” for each course and a semester total. Your syllabus or scheme of study also lists them.
