How to Remove the Background from an Image for Free

Remove a photo background for free with in-browser AI, iPhone, Mac, Windows 11 or Android, then get clean edges and save it as a PNG with transparency.

By , Founder and editor-in-chiefPublished

To remove the background from an image, open it in a background remover, let the AI find the subject, check the edges, and download the result as a PNG with a transparent background. You can do it free in your browser with our Background Remover, and recent iPhones, Macs and Windows 11 PCs also have a built-in option.

How good the result looks depends mostly on the photo you start with. This guide covers the free methods on each device and the habits that give clean edges.

How AI background removal works

Modern background removers use a machine-learning model trained on many images where people and objects have been carefully cut out. The model looks at your photo and estimates, for every pixel, how likely it is to belong to the main subject. The result is a mask: white where the subject is, black for the background, and shades of grey at soft edges like hair and fur.

The mask is then applied to your photo, and the background pixels become transparent. Because the mask has grey levels, edges fade smoothly instead of looking cut out with scissors.

Our Background Remover runs this model inside your browser. The first time you use it, your browser downloads the model; after that, your photos are processed on your device and never uploaded. That makes it a good fit for product photos you haven’t launched yet, or pictures of your family and home.

Free ways to remove a background

Method Works on Cost Best for
Browser tool (AI in the browser) Any modern browser Free Any device, full-size results, privacy
Lift subject from photo iPhone and iPad Free, built in Quick stickers and messages
Preview, Finder quick action Mac Free, built in Single images
Paint, Photos app Windows 11 Free, built in Single images
Gallery app tools Many Android phones Free, built in on some models Quick sharing

In your browser (any device)

  1. Open Background Remover.
  2. Choose a photo or drag it onto the page.
  3. Wait a few seconds while the subject is detected. The first run takes longer while the model loads.
  4. Check the result at full size, especially around hair, hands and see-through areas.
  5. Download it as a PNG to keep the transparent background, or pick a solid colour if you need one.

On iPhone and iPad

In the Photos app, open the picture and touch and hold the subject until a glowing outline appears. Then tap Copy to paste it into another app, or Share to send it. This works on iOS 16 and later, and also in other places such as screenshots and Safari. The cut-out is saved with a transparent background when you share it as an image.

On a Mac

In Preview, open the image and use Remove Background. Apple’s Preview guide lists it under editing images. In Finder, you can also Control-click an image and choose Quick Actions > Remove Background on recent versions of macOS. Both create a version with a transparent background.

On Windows 11

The current version of Microsoft Paint has a Remove background button in its image tools. Open the image in Paint, select Remove background, then save as PNG to keep the transparency. You can also select part of an image first to remove the background from just that area. The Windows Photos app has background tools in its editor as well, including blur and replace.

On Android

Many recent Android phones can lift a subject out of a photo in their gallery app; on Samsung Galaxy phones, for example, you touch and hold the subject in Gallery and then copy, share or save it. Menu names vary by phone, so if your gallery app doesn’t offer it, use a browser tool in Chrome.

Tips for clean edges

The AI does most of the work, but you can make its job much easier:

  1. Start with contrast. A dark jacket against a pale wall separates easily. A white mug on a white table does not.
  2. Light the subject evenly. Soft daylight from a window beats a harsh flash. Strong shadows can be mistaken for part of the subject.
  3. Keep the subject sharp. Motion blur and soft focus turn edges into mush. A blurred background, on the other hand, helps.
  4. Give hair a plain backdrop. Flyaway hair is the hardest thing to cut out. A plain, contrasting background behind the head gives the model a clean signal.
  5. Use a large original. A 3,000-pixel-wide photo gives cleaner edges than a 600-pixel thumbnail. Resize after removing the background, not before.
  6. Watch see-through objects. Glass, veils and smoke are partly transparent. Expect to accept some imperfection or to retouch by hand.
  7. Check against two backgrounds. Look at the cut-out on both white and black. A light fringe (halo) shows up on dark backgrounds, and dark specks show up on light ones.

Which format should you save in?

Format Transparency Use it for
PNG Yes Logos, product cut-outs, anything you will place on other backgrounds
WebP Yes Websites: much smaller files than PNG, with transparency
JPG No Only when you add a solid background colour first

If you save a cut-out as JPG, the transparent area turns into a solid colour, usually white or black. That is fine for a white product background, but not for a logo you want to place on different colours. For a website, WebP keeps transparency in a far smaller file; see AVIF vs WebP vs JPG for how the formats compare. To shrink the finished image further, use Compress Image, and to make it fit a set size, Resize Image.

Common uses, with practical settings

Use Background to add Typical output size
Online shop product photo Pure white Square, 1,000–2,000 px
Profile picture Solid brand colour or soft blur Square, at least 400 × 400 px
Logo for a document or QR code Transparent Width you will display it at, ×2 for sharp screens
Presentation slide Transparent About 1,000 px wide
Sticker for chat apps Transparent Around 512 px

A note on ID and passport photos

It is tempting to fix a passport photo by swapping a busy background for a white one. Be careful: many countries ban edited photos, and some, like Canada, explicitly forbid filters and AI edits. Take the photo against a real plain wall instead. Our passport photo size guide lists the background colour each country requires.

FAQ

Is there a completely free background remover?

Yes. The built-in tools on iPhone, Mac and Windows 11 are free, and our browser tool is free with no sign-up, watermark or image limit. It runs on your device, so there is nothing to pay for server time.

Why does the cut-out have a white halo around it?

The edge pixels still contain some of the old background colour. It shows most when you place a subject shot against a white wall onto a dark background. Shoot against a background closer in brightness to where the image will be used, or add a thin outline or shadow to hide the fringe.

Can I remove the background from many images at once?

With a browser tool, yes, one after another without uploading anything. The built-in phone and computer tools are designed for one image at a time.

Does removing the background reduce image quality?

No. The subject’s pixels are kept as they were. Only the background is made transparent. Quality is lost only if you later save the result as a heavily compressed JPG.
