Unlock PDF

Save a copy of your protected PDF that opens without a password.

Files are processed in your browser and never uploaded. How it works

or drop it here

This tool removes a password you already know. It does not guess, crack or bypass passwords. If you have lost the password, ask the person or organisation that sent you the file for a new copy.

How to use the Unlock PDF

  1. 1Click Choose PDF file or drop the protected PDF onto the box.
  2. 2The tool tells you whether the file needs an open password or only has restrictions.
  3. 3Type the password you know and click Unlock PDF.
  4. 4Download the unlocked copy. Your original file stays protected.

What this tool does, and what it does not

Unlock PDF removes a password you already know from a PDF. You type the password once, and the tool saves a new copy without encryption, so it opens straight away next time and works with other PDF tools.

It does not guess, crack or work around passwords. If the password is wrong, the file stays locked. That keeps the tool fair to the people who protect their documents, and it is the only honest way such a tool can work: a well-protected PDF cannot be opened without its password.

How unlocking works

A protected PDF is encrypted: its text and images are scrambled with a key that can only be rebuilt from the correct password. When you click Unlock PDF, the tool:

  1. checks your password against the check values stored in the file,
  2. rebuilds the key and decrypts every page, font and image,
  3. saves the decrypted document as a new PDF without an encryption dictionary.

This happens in your browser. Your PDF and your password never leave your device, which matters for exactly the kind of documents that usually arrive locked.

The two kinds of lock

When you choose a file, the tool tells you which kind of protection it has.

What you see What it means What to enter
“This PDF needs a password to open.” An open (user) password encrypts the whole file The password you use to open it
“This PDF opens freely but limits printing, copying or editing.” Only permission restrictions, set with an owner password The permissions password from the author
“This PDF is not password-protected.” No encryption at all Nothing; the file is already unlocked

If a file has both, either password works: the open password or the owner password.

Worked example: a locked bank statement

Many banks email monthly statements as PDFs locked with a password such as your date of birth or the last digits of your account number. Say the email says the password is your birth date as DDMMYYYY.

  1. Choose statement-october.pdf. The tool says “This PDF needs a password to open.”
  2. Type 14071990 and click Unlock PDF.
  3. Download statement-october-unlocked.pdf. It opens without asking for a password.

Now you can combine twelve months into one file with Merge PDF, or shrink it for an upload portal with Compress PDF.

If the tool says the password is not correct, check:

  • Caps Lock and the case of each letter; passwords are case-sensitive.
  • Spaces before or after the password, especially when pasting.
  • Look-alike characters such as 0 and O, or 1, l and I.
  • The format the sender asked for, such as DDMMYYYY versus YYYYMMDD.

Keep sensitive copies safe

An unlocked PDF can be opened by anyone who gets hold of it. Store it somewhere private, and delete copies you no longer need. If you need to send it on, consider adding your own password with Protect PDF, or share only the pages that are needed using Extract PDF Pages.

Frequently asked questions

Can this tool unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?

No. It only removes a password you already know. It does not guess or crack passwords. Ask whoever sent the file for the password or an unprotected copy.

Why remove a password at all?

Bank statements, payslips and bills often arrive locked with your date of birth or account number. An unlocked copy is easier to merge, upload to a portal or archive.

My PDF opens without a password but will not print. What now?

The author set permission restrictions. Enter the permissions (owner) password to remove them. Without it, ask the author for an unrestricted copy.

Is the unlocked PDF identical to the original?

Yes. The pages, text, images, links and bookmarks are the same; only the encryption is removed.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. The PDF is decrypted inside your browser, so neither the file nor the password leaves your device.
