About converting Euro to US dollar

Euro–dollar is the most traded currency pair in the world. The rate on this page is the ECB’s own euro reference rate for the US dollar, published around 16:00 Central European Time on every working day, so no cross-calculation is involved.

The ECB rate is a snapshot taken once a day. Trading prices move all day long, so a quote from a bank or broker at another time will differ slightly.

Banks and exchange companies add a margin to the mid-market rate shown here, and some charge a fixed fee as well. Compare the final amount received, not just the headline rate.

How the EUR to USD rate is worked out

1 EUR = (USD per euro) ÷ (EUR per euro) USD

Rates are stored per euro, so every pair is a cross rate through the euro, and the inverse is 1 divided by the rate. Major currencies use the European Central Bank’s euro reference rates; others, such as the Pakistani rupee and Gulf currencies, use the open-source currency-api feed, linked through the US dollar. The working box under the result shows the sum with today’s numbers.

The rate is a mid-market reference for information only. For a transfer, compare the amount the recipient receives with two or three providers. For any other pair, use the full currency converter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ECB reference rate?

A daily rate for the euro against about 30 currencies, published by the European Central Bank for information. It is widely used as a benchmark but is not a trading price.

Why does my card statement show a different rate?

Card networks use their own rate at the time the payment settles, and your bank may add a foreign transaction fee on top.

Is the rate updated at weekends?

No. The ECB publishes on working days only, so the Friday rate stays in place over the weekend and on public holidays.

How current is the EUR to USD rate on this page?

The converter loads the latest European Central Bank reference rates when the page opens. The ECB publishes once each working day at about 16:00 CET, and the rate date is shown under the result.
