Why convert PNG to JPG?
PNG is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly. That is perfect for logos and screenshots, but wasteful for photos. A photo saved as PNG is often four or five times bigger than the same photo as a JPG, with no visible benefit. Converting to JPG makes it small enough for email attachments, upload forms with size limits, and websites that load quickly.
Common reasons people convert:
- An application form or marketplace accepts only JPG.
- A phone or editing app exported a photo as PNG and it is several megabytes.
- You want to email or message a batch of screenshots and they are too large.
What happens to transparency
PNG can store transparent and partly transparent pixels; JPG cannot. During conversion every pixel is blended with the background colour you choose:
A fully transparent pixel becomes pure background. A red pixel at 50% opacity over white becomes a light red (255, 127, 127). That is why a logo with soft, anti-aliased edges still looks smooth on white after conversion, but shows a white fringe if you later place it on a dark page. Choose a background that matches where the image will be used, or keep the PNG when you need real transparency.
Real numbers
We converted lossless PNG versions of two 1920 × 1200 photos:
| Image | PNG | JPG at quality 90 | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hills and sky photo | 1.6 MB | 301 KB | 81% |
| Forest lake photo | 1.9 MB | 314 KB | 84% |
Screenshots behave differently. A screenshot of a mostly white web page may be only 100–300 KB as PNG, because PNG is excellent at large flat areas. As a JPG it may not be much smaller and the text gains faint smudges. For screenshots, either keep PNG or use a high quality (90–95).
Choosing the quality
- 90 (default): no visible difference for photos, still a large saving.
- 80–85: smaller files for web pages and messages; differences only show when zoomed in.
- 95–100: for text, line drawings and anything you will print. Files are larger.
If you need a specific size, such as “under 200 KB” for a form, use Compress to KB, which picks the quality for you.
Other ways to convert
- Windows: open the PNG in Paint and choose File → Save as → JPEG picture. Transparent areas turn white.
- Mac: open it in Preview, choose File → Export, set the format to JPEG and use the quality slider.
- Phones: iPhone and Android have no built-in converter; this page works in Safari and Chrome.
Those tools convert one file at a time and do not let you choose the background colour. Here you can drop a whole folder, set the colour once and download a ZIP.
Privacy and file names
Files are converted on your device and are never uploaded, which matters for screenshots of chats, bank apps or documents. Output files keep their names with a new extension, for example Screenshot 2026-10-21 at 09.15.png becomes Screenshot 2026-10-21 at 09.15.jpg. Text chunks that some apps hide inside PNG files are not copied.

Going the other way? Use JPG to PNG. To shrink images without changing format, try Compress Image. To put the JPGs into one document, use JPG to PDF.
