How PDF rotation works
Every page in a PDF has a small setting called Rotate that tells a reader which way up to show it. It can be 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees, turning clockwise. Rotating a page does not redraw anything: the tool simply adds to that setting and saves the file again.
That is why rotation here is lossless. Text stays selectable, images keep every pixel, and the file size barely changes. It is also why the result looks the same in Adobe Reader, Chrome, Edge, Preview on a Mac, and the PDF viewer on your phone.
For example, a page that was already set to 270° and is turned right by 90° ends up at (270 + 90) mod 360 = 0°, which is upright.
Rotate all pages or only some
- Every page: with no pages selected, the Left 90°, Right 90° and 180° buttons turn the whole document. This fixes a scan that was fed in sideways.
- Selected pages: tap thumbnails to select them (Shift-click selects a run on a computer), then press a button. Only those pages turn.
- One page at a time: each thumbnail has its own left and right buttons, which is often the fastest way to fix a single landscape table in a portrait report.
Thumbnails turn as you click, so you can see the result before saving. Reset puts every page back the way it was.
Worked example
A 9-page report was scanned with the landscape spreadsheet on pages 4 and 5 lying on its side, and page 9 came out upside down.
- Choose the PDF.
- Under the page 4 thumbnail, tap the rotate right button. Do the same for page 5. Their captions now read “Page 4 · right 90°” and “Page 5 · right 90°”.
- Tap the page 9 thumbnail to select it, then press 180°.
- The note next to the save button says “3 pages will be rotated”. Click Save rotated PDF and download
report-rotated.pdf.
Which way to turn
| The page looks like… | Press |
|---|---|
| The top of the text points left | Right 90° |
| The top of the text points right | Left 90° |
| The text is upside down | 180° |
If you guess wrong, press the opposite button. Nothing is saved until you click Save rotated PDF.
Rotating in a reader vs. rotating the file
Many PDF readers have a rotate button in the toolbar. In most of them, it only turns your current view and forgets the change when you close the file, so the person you email it to still sees the sideways page. This tool writes the rotation into the PDF, so the fix travels with the file.
Tips
- Mixed portrait and landscape pages are normal. A landscape page in a portrait document should be turned so its text reads correctly. It will appear wider than the others, which is fine for both screen and print.
- Building a document from photos? JPG to PDF reads the orientation saved by your phone camera, so photos usually arrive the right way up.
- Need to reorder or remove pages too? Organize PDF lets you rotate, move and delete pages in one go.
- Combining files afterwards? Rotate first, then use Merge PDF. Each page keeps its rotation when merged.
- Bookmarks, links and form fields are kept, because rotation changes only the page setting and nothing else.
