How to Compress a PDF on Android (Free, Without an App)

Compress a PDF on Android in Chrome without an app: choose the file, pick a compression level and get a smaller copy for email, WhatsApp or forms.

Android phones don’t come with a PDF compressor. Files by Google, Google Drive and most phone makers’ file managers can open and share PDFs, but none of them has a “reduce size” option. You don’t need to install a PDF app with ads and a subscription, though. Open Compress PDF in Chrome, pick the file from your phone, choose a level, and download the smaller copy. The work happens inside the browser, so the PDF is never uploaded.

Below are the exact steps, how to pick the right setting, and what to do when a portal still rejects the file.

Step by step: compress a PDF in Chrome

  1. Know where the PDF is. Files you open from Gmail, WhatsApp or a website are normally saved in the Download folder. WhatsApp documents may also sit in Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Documents. If you can’t find it, open the PDF in the app it came in, tap Share or the three-dot menu, and choose Save or Download.
  2. Open the tool. In Chrome, go to Compress PDF.
  3. Choose the file. Tap the upload box. Android opens its file picker. Tap the menu (three lines) to switch between Downloads, Drive and your phone’s storage, then tap your PDF.
  4. Pick a level. Start with Recommended. For scanned pages, go straight to Strong.
  5. Compress, then download. When the progress bar finishes, tap Download. Chrome saves the new file to Download and shows a notification you can tap to open it.

The original stays unchanged. The compressed copy has a suffix in its name, so you can tell them apart.

Samsung Internet, Firefox and Edge on Android work the same way. If the download button seems to do nothing inside an app such as Gmail or Facebook, you’re in an in-app browser. Tap the three-dot menu and choose Open in Chrome.

Which setting shrinks your PDF

What’s in the PDF Try What to expect
Typed text (letters, invoices, CVs) Recommended Small savings; these files are already small
Scans from Google Drive or a scanner app Strong, 100 dpi Often 50 to 90 percent smaller
Photos saved as PDF Strong, 100 to 150 dpi Large savings, slight softening
Brochures with big images Recommended first, then Strong Depends on the images

Recommended is lossless. It cleans out duplicate and unused data but keeps every image and letter exactly as it was.

Strong redraws each page as a JPEG at the dpi and quality you choose. That is what makes scans much smaller. The text then becomes part of a picture, so you can’t select or search it any more. If you need searchable text, run the result through OCR PDF afterwards.

Common Android size limits

You will usually compress a PDF because something has a limit:

Where you’re sending it Typical limit
Gmail attachment 25 MB; larger files are sent as a Google Drive link (Google)
WhatsApp document 2 GB
Government, job and university portals Often 100 KB to 2 MB per file

Gmail and WhatsApp limits are generous, so compression is mostly about upload forms. Those forms usually state their limit next to the upload button. Read it before you start; it tells you how hard to compress.

Getting under a strict limit

Work out a per-page budget first: divide the size limit by the number of pages.

  • 1 MB for 5 pages is 200 KB a page. Strong at 150 dpi usually fits with sharp text.
  • 500 KB for 10 pages is 50 KB a page. Strong at 100 dpi and quality around 60 usually fits.
  • 200 KB for 10 pages is 20 KB a page. That is very tight for readable text. Cut pages or split the file.

Then work through these, checking the result each time:

  1. Lower the dpi. Try 150, 100, then 72.
  2. Lower the quality. Try 70, 60, then 50.
  3. Drop pages. Use Delete PDF pages to keep only what the form asks for.
  4. Split. If the portal has several upload slots, Split PDF makes two smaller files.
  5. Use a preset. Compress PDF to 500 KB and compress PDF to 200 KB aim for those sizes for you.

Scanning smaller on Android

Many large PDFs on Android come from the Google Drive scanner (tap + then Scan in the Drive app) or the camera’s document mode. A few habits keep them small from the start:

  • Use a black-and-white or greyscale filter for text pages. Colour scans can be several times bigger.
  • Crop to the page edges. The scanner tries to do this; adjust the corners if it misses.
  • Scan only the pages you need. Every page adds hundreds of kilobytes.

If you already have the pages as photos, you can choose the size up front. Use JPG to PDF to combine the images into one PDF, then compress that.

Check the result before you send it

After compressing, open the new file and zoom into a page with small print. Check:

  • Can you read every number, such as account numbers, dates and amounts?
  • Are signatures and stamps still visible?
  • Is the page order right?

To see the file size, long-press the file in Files by Google and tap the info (i) icon, or look at the size shown under the file name. On Samsung phones, open My Files, long-press the file and choose Details.

Troubleshooting

“File type not supported” in the picker. Make sure you’re choosing the PDF, not a shortcut or a link to it in another app. Download it to your phone first.

The result is the same size. The PDF was already compressed. Use Strong, or remove pages.

It’s slow on a long document. Compression runs on your phone’s processor. A 100-page scan can take a minute or two on an older phone. Keep Chrome open on the page until it finishes.

The PDF has a password. If you know it, remove it with Unlock PDF, compress, then add it back with Protect PDF.

FAQ

Is there a built-in way to compress a PDF on Android?

No. Android’s file managers and Google Drive can open, share and scan PDFs, but they can’t reduce their size. A browser tool like Compress PDF does it without installing anything.

Will compressing my PDF upload it to a server?

Not with our tool. It runs inside Chrome on your phone, so your documents stay on the device. Many other online compressors do upload files, so check before using one for private papers.

How do I compress a PDF to under 200 KB on Android?

Use Strong compression at 72 to 100 dpi and a quality of about 50, or the 200 KB preset. If the PDF has many pages, delete the ones the form doesn’t need first.

Why can’t I select text after compressing?

Strong compression turns each page into an image. Use Recommended if you need selectable text, or run the compressed file through OCR to add a text layer back.
