Worked examples
A 1 kanal house in DHA Lahore
1 kanal × 20 = 20 marla
1 kanal = 20 marla. Twenty marla, or 4,500 sq ft of plot under the 225 sq ft standard.
A plot advertised as 2 kanal 10 marla
2.5 kanal × 20 = 50 marla
2.5 kanal = 50 marla. Ten marla is half a kanal, so the plot is 2.5 kanal, which is 50 marla.
Converting kanal to marla in real life
Kanal and marla are the units for plots, houses and farmland in Pakistan, especially Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and in parts of North India. Property ads mix them freely ("1 kanal house", "10 marla plot", "2 kanal 5 marla"), so converting everything to marla makes plots easy to compare.
The ratio of 20 marla to a kanal never changes, but the size of a marla does, which changes the kanal too:
- 225 sq ft marla (Lahore, LDA, DHA Lahore, Bahria): 1 kanal = 4,500 sq ft.
- 272 sq ft marla (other Punjab districts): 1 kanal = 5,440 sq ft.
- 272.25 sq ft revenue marla: 1 kanal = 5,445 sq ft, and 8 kanal make exactly one acre.
For square feet, square yards or acres, use the land area converter or marla to sq ft.
