Worked examples
A $600 laptop anywhere in Connecticut (6.35%)
| Rate | 6.35% |
|---|---|
| Price before tax | $600.00 |
| Sales tax | $38.10 |
| Total | $638.10 |
Working: $600.00 × 6.35% = $38.10. There are no local taxes, so the rate is the same everywhere. The laptop is under the luxury thresholds, so the general rate applies.
Working back from a $79.37 receipt at 6.35%
| Rate | 6.35% |
|---|---|
| Price before tax | $74.63 |
| Sales tax | $4.74 |
| Total | $79.37 |
Working back: $79.37 ÷ 1.0635 = $74.63, so the tax was $4.74. Divide by 1.0635 for the pre-tax price. A restaurant receipt uses the 7.35% meals rate, so divide by 1.0735 instead.
Connecticut's other rates
Besides the general 6.35% rate, the DRS lists several special rates: 7.35% on meals and certain beverages, 7.75% on motor vehicles over $50,000, jewelry over $5,000 and clothing, footwear, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets or watches over $1,000, 9.35% on short-term passenger car rentals, 2.99% on boats and 1% on computer and data processing services. The calculator uses the general 6.35% rate; for these items, multiply the price by the special rate instead.
Sales Tax Free Week and school supplies
Connecticut's Sales Tax Free Week runs each August. In 2026 it ran from 16 to 22 August and, after a 2026 law raised the cap, covered clothing and footwear priced under $300 per item, up from under $100, with backpacks and cleats added. A separate 2026 law made nonelectronic school supplies exempt all year from 1 July 2026. Groceries, prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines are exempt year-round.
