TPT = Arizona transaction privilege tax, GET = Hawaii general excise tax, GRT = New Mexico gross receipts tax: taxes on the seller that are usually passed on to buyers. Rates as of 1 July 2026; each state page shows the date it was last checked.

How state and local sales taxes add up

The rate you pay is the state rate plus every local rate for the place of sale: county, city and special districts such as transit or stadium districts. In states without local taxes, such as Connecticut, District of Columbia, Indiana and Kentucky, one rate applies everywhere. Elsewhere the rate can change from one side of a street to the other, which is why we link each state's official address lookup instead of guessing a rate from a ZIP code. Online orders are taxed at the delivery address.

Groceries, medicine and clothing

Almost every state exempts prescription drugs. Groceries are exempt from state tax in most states, but Hawaii, Idaho and South Dakota tax them at the full state rate, and 7 states use a lower grocery rate. Clothing is usually taxed, with full or partial exemptions in a handful of states and tax-free weekends in others. The table above and each state page spell out the rules.

Working back from a total

To find the price before tax, divide the total by 1 plus the rate, never subtract the rate from the total. Our sales tax calculator and every state page do both directions, show the working and round to the cent the way receipts do.

Frequently asked questions

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska still lets boroughs and cities charge local sales taxes (average 1.82%), so only Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon are free of general sales tax everywhere.

Which state has the highest sales tax?

California has the highest statewide rate at 7.25%. Including local taxes, Louisiana has the highest average combined rate at 10.13%, followed by Tennessee (9.61%) and Washington (9.57%).

Which state has the lowest sales tax?

Among states with a sales tax, Colorado has the lowest state rate at 2.9%, though local taxes push the average combined rate higher. The lowest average combined rate among states that charge any sales tax is in Alaska (1.82%).

Which states tax groceries?

Hawaii, Idaho and South Dakota tax groceries at the full state rate. Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Virginia tax them at a reduced rate. Most other states exempt groceries from state tax, though local taxes can still apply in some of them.

Why is my sales tax different from the state rate?

Most states let counties, cities and special districts add their own rates, so the rate at a store is the state rate plus every local rate for that address. Each state page links the official lookup tool for the exact rate.
