Worked examples
A 100 g bar of chocolate
100 g ÷ 28.34952313 = 3.5274 oz
100 grams = 3.5274 ounces. Just over 3.5 oz, which is why the same bar is labelled “3.5 oz” on US shelves.
250 g of butter for a cake
250 g ÷ 28.34952313 = 8.8185 oz
250 grams = 8.8185 ounces. About 8.8 oz. On kitchen scales that only show ounces, weigh out 8¾ oz and you will be within a few grams.
Converting grams to ounces in real life
This conversion comes up when you follow a metric recipe with American kitchen scales, compare food labels, or weigh a letter or small parcel for US postage. Packaged food sold in the US often shows both, so a 100 g chocolate bar is labelled 3.5 oz.
Watch out for two other ounces:
- Fluid ounces measure volume, not weight. For milk, water or oil in a measuring jug, use ml to oz instead.
- Troy ounces are used for gold, silver and platinum. A troy ounce is 31.1035 g, about 10% heavier than the ordinary ounce on this page, so do not use this converter for bullion prices.
The ounce here is the avoirdupois ounce, one sixteenth of a pound, used for everyday weights in the US and UK.
