Converting tola to grams in real life
The tola is the traditional unit for gold and silver in Pakistan, India, Nepal and among South Asian buyers in the Gulf. It was fixed at 180 grains in British India in 1833, which gives the modern figure of 11.6638 g, or exactly 3/8 of a troy ounce. One tola splits into 12 masha, and a masha into 8 ratti.
Two things often confuse buyers:
- Per tola versus per 10 grams. Gold rates in Pakistan are quoted per tola and per 10 g, and in India mainly per 10 g. A tola is 11.66 g, so the tola price is about 16.6% higher for the same gold.
- The TT bar. The “ten tola” bar sold in Dubai and the Gulf weighs 116.64 g, or 3.75 troy ounces. It is not a 100 g bar.
