Worked examples
A 10 g gold coin or rate unit
10 g ÷ 11.6638038 = 0.8574 tola
10 grams = 0.8574 tola. Just under 0.86 tola, or 10 masha and about 2.3 ratti. This is why a per 10 g rate always looks cheaper than a per tola rate.
A 1 troy ounce gold coin (31.1035 g)
31.1034768 g ÷ 11.6638038 = 2.6667 tola
31.1034768 grams = 2.6667 tola. Exactly 2⅔ tola, because a tola is 3/8 of a troy ounce. International gold prices are quoted per troy ounce, so this helps you compare them with local tola rates.
Converting grams to tola in real life
Modern jewellery scales and many receipts show grams, but gold is still priced and talked about in tola across Pakistan, India and South Asian communities in the Gulf. Converting grams to tola lets you compare a receipt with the day’s tola rate, or check that a piece weighs what you were told.
Jewellers often write a weight as tola, masha and ratti rather than a decimal. To split a result, keep the whole tola, multiply the decimal part by 12 to get masha, then multiply what is left of the masha by 8 to get ratti. So 20 g = 1.7147 tola = 1 tola 8 masha and about 4.6 ratti.
A rate quoted per 10 g is not a tola rate. Multiply a per-10 g price by 1.16638 to get the price per tola.
