Worked examples
A height of 5.75 feet
5.75 ft × 12 = 69 in
5.75 feet = 69 inches. That is 69 inches, or 5 ft 9 in. Forms that ask for height in inches only want the 69.
An 8-foot length of timber
8 ft × 12 = 96 in
8 feet = 96 inches. 96 inches. Cut lists for shelving are often in inches, so this tells you how many 30-inch shelves you can get from one board (three, with offcuts).
Converting feet to inches in real life
This conversion comes up when a tape measure, a plan and a form disagree. Tape measures and timber are marked in feet and inches, some apps and spreadsheets give lengths in decimal feet, and many forms ask for height in inches only. Surveyors and engineers in the US often work in decimal feet too.
A common mistake is to read 5.6 ft as 5 ft 6 in. It is not: 0.6 ft × 12 = 7.2 in, so 5.6 ft is 5 ft 7.2 in. To turn decimal feet into feet and inches, keep the whole feet and multiply only the decimal part by 12. For metric results, use feet to cm.
