Worked examples
An American football field
100 yd × 0.9144 = 91.44 m
100 yards = 91.44 metres. The field between the goal lines is 100 yards, about 91.4 m. With both end zones it is 120 yards, or about 109.7 m.
A 400-yard par-4 golf hole
400 yd × 0.9144 = 365.76 m
400 yards = 365.76 metres. About 366 m. Golf apps outside the US often show metres, so this is the number you would see there.
Converting yards to metres in real life
Yards survive in a few places: American football fields, golf course distances, cricket pitches (22 yards), fabric and yarn sold in the US, and UK road signs for short distances. Metres are used for the same things in most other countries, so sewing patterns, golf apps and sports stats often need converting.
The quick rule is to knock about a tenth off: yards × 0.9 is within 2% of the exact answer. For fabric, buy a little extra: 3 yards is 2.74 m, so a pattern asking for 3 yards needs at least 2.75 m of cloth. In South Asia, the gaz is the same length as the yard, and the length converter lists it separately.
