Worked examples
An Olympic 50 m pool
50 m ÷ 0.9144 = 54.6807 yd
50 metres = 54.6807 yards. About 54.7 yards, more than twice the 25-yard pools used by most US high schools and colleges.
3 metres of fabric
3 m ÷ 0.9144 = 3.2808 yd
3 metres = 3.2808 yards. About 3.28 yards. A US pattern that asks for 3 1/4 yards (3.25) needs just under 3 m, so 3 m is enough.
Converting metres to yards in real life
Swimmers know this one well: pools are either 25 or 50 metres (short and long course) or 25 yards, which is common in the US. Times from yard pools and metre pools are not directly comparable, because 25 m is about 27.3 yards. Fabric, garden hose, rope and track distances bought or measured in metres may also need converting for US patterns or instructions.
A metre is about 9% longer than a yard, so the number of yards is always a bit larger than the number of metres. If you only need a rough figure, add 10%. For longer distances, km to miles is easier to read.
