Worked examples
A 5K parkrun
5 km ÷ 1.609344 = 3.1069 mi
5 kilometres = 3.1069 miles. Just over 3.1 miles. A 30-minute 5K works out at about 9 minutes 39 seconds per mile.
A full marathon
42.195 km ÷ 1.609344 = 26.2188 mi
42.195 kilometres = 26.2188 miles. The famous 26.2 miles. The odd distance dates from the 1908 London Olympics course.
Converting kilometres to miles in real life
Runners meet this conversion all the time: most races are set in kilometres (5K, 10K, half marathon at 21.0975 km), while many training apps and US plans count miles. Drivers need it too when they cross from a kilometre country into the UK or US, or rent a car with a speedometer in miles.
A quick mental method uses the Fibonacci numbers: 5 km is about 3 miles, 8 km is about 5 miles, 13 km is about 8 miles. It works because the ratio is close to the golden ratio. For speed rather than distance, see km/h to mph.
