Worked examples
A $55,000 salary in Cheyenne, single, paid every two weeks
| Per paycheck | Per year | |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay | $2,115.38 | $55,000 |
| Federal income tax | − $170.00 | − $4,420 |
| Social Security and Medicare | − $161.83 | − $4,208 |
| Take-home pay | $1,783.56 | $46,373 |
Single, paid every two weeks (26 paychecks). With no state or local income tax, federal income tax and FICA are the only taxes, so the effective tax rate is lower than in any neighboring state with an income tax.
A $120,000 household in Casper, married filing jointly with two children
| Per paycheck | Per year | |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay | $4,615.38 | $120,000 |
| 401(k) at 6% | − $276.92 | − $7,200 |
| Federal income tax | − $183.69 | − $4,776 |
| Social Security and Medicare | − $353.08 | − $9,180 |
| Take-home pay | $3,801.69 | $98,844 |
Married filing jointly, 2 children, paid every two weeks (26 paychecks). The 6% 401(k) deferral and the federal child tax credit lower the federal tax; Wyoming adds nothing, so every saved dollar of federal tax is the whole saving.
How Wyoming funds the state without an income tax
Wyoming relies on taxes paid on oil, gas, coal and other minerals, on sales and use tax, and on property tax. The Wyoming Department of Revenue runs separate divisions for excise (sales) taxes, mineral taxes and property taxes, and none of them touches your wages. Businesses pay state unemployment insurance on their payroll, so you will not see a state line on your pay stub at all.
Working across the border
If you live in Wyoming but work in a state that taxes income, that state taxes the wages you earn there. A commuter to Colorado pays Colorado’s flat 4.4% on Colorado wages, and Utah charges 4.45% and Idaho 5.3% on work done there. Wyoming has no reciprocal agreements because it has no income tax to trade. See the Colorado, Utah and Idaho pages for those paychecks.
What still comes out of your pay
Federal income tax depends on your filing status and Form W-4. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026 and Medicare takes 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000. Pre-tax 401(k) deferrals lower your federal income tax but not FICA. Try the salary calculator to turn an hourly wage into a yearly salary first.
